CDC e-HAP FYI Updates: National HIV Testing Day 2012

June 23, 2012
June 27 marks the 19th annual National HIV Testing Day (NHTD), a day to promote HIV testing and early diagnosis of HIV across the United States. NHTD is organized each year by the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and AIDS.gov. The theme of this annual observance is “Take the Test, Take Control,” which sends a powerful message about learning one’s HIV status and reminds us that HIV testing saves lives.
NHTD 2012 Events: CDC encourages you to take part in this year’s testing day activities, including:
  • AIDS.gov Webinar: HIV Testing for an AIDS-Free Generation on June 26 from 2-3 PM ET for Federal staff, stakeholders, and for grantees who work with domestic HIV/AIDS programs. Learn more and register now  Download and share this flyer. Some of the US government’s leading authorities on HIV/AIDS, including Dr. Jonathan Mermin, Director, CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP), will discuss the status of global and domestic HIV testing as a tool to move toward an AIDS-free America. The event will be moderated by Dr. Ronald O. Valdiserri, HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, Infectious Diseases.
  • CDC TwitterChat: @TalkHIV is hosting a chat on June 26 from 3-4 PM ET about stigma, homophobia, and HIV testing. The chat will include Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), and Dr. Howell Wechsler, Director of CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health. To join the conversation, follow #NHTDchat

How you can take action on National HIV Testing Day and throughout the year
  • Get tested for HIV as CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine medical care.
  • Ask your doctor for an HIV test.
  • Find a place to get tested in your community by going to www.hivtest.org, calling 1-800-CDC-INFO, or texting your zip code to KNOW IT (566948).
  • Get tested once a year or more often if you have more than one sex partner, inject drugs or are a man who has sex with other men.
  • Lower your risk for acquiring HIV by having sex with only one partner who you know is uninfected, or using a condom every time you have anal, vaginal, or oral sex.
  • Get medical care as soon as possible if you have HIV to stay healthier longer and to keep from passing the virus on to others.
